For more than 150 years fine art and creative photographers have used large format cameras and film to capture the beauty of nature with the highest level of detail possible. Now, medium format digital camera system have equaled and indeed surpassed large format film in almost every aspect of image quality.

Phase One, together with four of the world's leading photographic educators, are now providing a new series of exclusive workshops for photographers of all abilities who wish to discover the capabilities of high-end medium format systems – specifically the Phase One P65+, 60 Megapixel back, and Phase One 645 camera and lens system.

The P65+ file is truly something to behold. You can immerse yourself in the image's stunning detail and transition smoothness. It is unlike anything that you have seen or produced before.

The Workshop

This workshop will take place in Death Valley, California. Participants will fly into Las Vegas International airport and will be picked up there by Phase One staff and driven to their accommodations for the week at The Furnace Creek Resort, a luxury hotel in the heart of Death Valley National Park.

Each day will be filled with photography and instruction, as well as allowing time for enjoyment of the resorts facilities, including an 18 hole golf course and swimming pools. All meals are included, and all driving to shooting locations within the park as well as to and from Las Vegas airport are provided in comfortable air-conditioned vans, with lots of room for everyone's photographic equipment.

– Airport pick up and drop-off will be contingent on your flight schedule.

Equipment? This workshop includes the loan of a complete brand new Phase One 645 camera system, lenses, and a 60 Megapixel P65+ back for the full workshop. You'll need to bring your own tripod. We will have large format printers on hand at the resort for printing classes, because your team of instructors are also among the world's leading experts in printing, and printing training.

Participants will be asked to bring their own laptop computer (Mac or Windows) and will be provided with a free copy of Capture One software.

Each day will be filled with at least two major multi-hour shooting opportunities at the various remarkable locales within and nearby the park. These include Ubehebe Crater, various ghost towns, Dante's View (5,475 feet above the valley's floor), Zabriskie Point, Artist's Palette, Badwater and The Devil's Golf Course. We may even have a few surprises to add to this list.

In addition there will be seminar sessions on a wide variety of topics, including full familiarization sessions on the camera and backs, as well as on Capture One software, integration with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, printing, color management, and field shooting techniques as well as exporing various camera hardware configurations.

The Dates

This exclusive seminar will take place from November 8 through November 13. On Sunday, Nov 8 you will be met at Las Vegas airport and then driven by a member of the Phase One team to The Furnace Creek Resort in Death Valley. Monday through Thursday will have you involved in an exciting series of shooting and training sessions with some of the industry's finest instructors, all of whom are also Phase One camera and back owners themselves.

On Friday, Nov 13 you will be driven back to Las Vegas for your return home.

The Instructors

The instructors for this seminar are Michael Reichmann, Jeff Schewe, Bill Atkinson and Mark Dubovoy. Each is a renowned photographer as well as educator. Each is also an owner and user of Phase One cameras and backs and uses them for their own creative and commercial applications. Thus makes them uniquely equipped to teach a wide range of photographic topics as well as use of this equipment.

Also participating to answer any technical questions about Phase One products will be Dr. Claus Mølgaard, Phase One's Chief Technology Officer and head of R&D. This will be a unique opportunity to spend time with one of the digital photography industry's leading experts.

Michael Reichmann
Jeff Schewe

Michael Reichmann has been both a professional photographer as well as avid amateur for more than 35 years. 

He is a Contributing Editor to Photo Techniques magazine, a columnist for American Photography magazine, and publisher and primary author of The Luminous Landscape web site – the world’s largest non-commercial site devoted to photographic education.

Michael teaches field workshops and seminars around the world including in Iceland, Costa Rica, Namibia, Bangladesh, China, and Antarctica, as well as extensive work in the USA and Canada. He is a frequent invited speaker at conferences worldwide.

Michael’s prints and portfolios are found in private as well as public collections in Canada, the U.S., and abroad.

Jeff Schewe is a digital pioneer. An award winning advertising photographer by trade, he has been a long term alpha/beta tester for Photoshop, Camera Raw and Lightroom, and has been personally involved with their development. He is also a well known fine art printing guru and is an Epson Stylus Pro member and leader of the Epson Print Academy.

Jeff is the co-author of “Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4” as well as co-author, along with Martin Evening, of "Photoshop CS4 For Photographers: The Ultimate Workshop”. He’s a member of the NAPP Photoshop Hall of Fame. Jeff is also a founding partner in PixelGenius, LLC makers of the PhotoKit™ line of plug-ins.

Jeff has also been seen in a variety of Luminous Landscape video tutorials along with his on-screen partner, Michael Reichmann, including their Camera To Print and Lightroom 2 tutorials.

Bill Atkinson
Mark Dubovoy

Bill Atkinson was a member of the original Macintosh team at Apple Computer, Atkinson designed much of the initial Macintosh user interface and wrote the original QuickDraw, MacPaint and HyperCard software.

A world-famous landscape and nature photographer, Bill has spent more than forty years refining his vision – hiking through forests and deserts; lugging camera gear through rain, mud and snow; seeking out the special light that reveals hidden beauty. Through intimate landscapes and close-up details, Atkinson's photographs highlight and celebrate the wonders of nature.

By developing his skills as a photographer and a fine art printmaker, Atkinson has been able to create expressive and archival photographs that faithfully share his experiences. As a pioneer of digital printing technologies, he teaches workshops in fine-art printmaking and has shared his expertise with over three hundred photographers.

Mark Dubovoy is a well-known photographer, educator and writer. His breathtaking images are a unique combination of impeccable aesthetics, a deep love for nature and flawless technique.

Mark is a regular contributor of technical articles for PHOTO Techniques magazine and The Luminous Landscape. He teaches his own workshops and is a guest lecturer at various other workshops around the world.

His photographs are included in a number of private collections, as well as the permanent collections of major Museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Monterey Art Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Nanao Japan.

After decades of using large format film, he made the transition to digital several years ago.


Claus Mølgaard has more than 12 years of experience within the fields of digital camera technology and image processing. Currently he holds the position as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President R&D at Phase One.

Prior to this he served as an assistant teacher at the Technical University of Denmark, where he also received his degree in Electrical Engineering. Over the years he has served as an external teacher and guest speaker at the Technical University; teaching digital electronics.

Claus has written books and articles about VHDL and Digital Camera technology. He is the inventor of patented and patent pending technologies within the fields of digital camera systems and data compression.

Travel and Accommodations

Participants will be responsible for their own transportation from their home to the Las Vegas Airport, and back from the Las Vegas Airport to their home. All other transportation will be provided by Phase One.

Accommodations will be at The Furnace Creek Resort, a luxury hotel in the heart of Death Valley. Each participant will have a private room, and all meals and beverages are also included.

The Camera System and Offer

Each participant will be provided with a brand new Phase One 645 camera and P65+ back, along with a Phase One 75-150mm zoom lens. This system will be yours to use exclusively during the seminar. A complete set of additional Phase One lenses of various focal lengths will be available for you to borrow throughout the week. If you would like to keep the system after the workshop, arrangements can be made.

If you prefer, a different Phase One back can be made available as an alternative to the P65+. Simply inform Phase One of your preference upon registration.

Each attendee will also receive two – 30x40" professionally produced prints from the images of their choice shot during the trip. Prints will be shipped after the event.

The Cost

The cost of this unique seminar is US $4,995 per person. This is an all-inclusive fee – transportation too and from Las Vegas and the resort, luxury accommodations in a private room, all meals and beverages, the loan of a complete Phase One 645 / P65+ camera system, as well as comprehensive and personalized field and classroom instruction are all included.

Spouses

Spouses are welcome, but there are no programs established for them, and therefore anyone who is not a workshop participant will have to make his or her own plans each day. Spouses are of course welcome at meals, and transportation to and from Las Vegas and the resort will be provided on the day of arrival and departure. The fee for a spouse attending will be $2,000 to cover room, meals and transportation.
