Urban Landscapes

Shadows & Patterns

Massey Hall Fire-Escape, Toronto: June, 2001

Photographed with a Leica M6 TTL and Tri-Elmar lens @ 50mm, on Ilford XP2 Super

My life balances between the wilderness and the urban. I live in a large city, and enjoy its pleasures, yet I feel most alive and stimulated when I’m hiking a remote canyon, as far from civilization as possible.

As a landscape photographer I am frustrated by spending as much time as I do in an urban environment, so to keep my photographic skills tuned I createProjectswhich can be undertakenwhereverI happen to be.

Brickworks — Toronto: July, 2001

Photographed with a Leica M6 TTL and 12mm f/5.6 Voigtl”nder Heliar on Provia 100F. Quadtone conversion in Photoshop.

This Project is not about architecture but instead about trying to find ways in which the urban environment either resembles the classic landscape or creates a unique landscape of its own. My intention isn’t to draw direct parallels between them but instead to find images that somehow appeal to the same esthetic.

So far I find myself “seeing” in black and white as I explore this subject though some of the shooting is with colour stock.

I won’t comment on the individual images at this point, but will tie them together conceptually when the Project is done.

Airport Stairwell — Toronto:August, 2001
